Projects We’ve Supported

Science Leadership Academy ($1000)

Mr. J. Hall
Take-Home & Classroom Hydroponic Systems

In partnership with Ecotone Renewables, approximately 100 7th and 8th grade students (virtual and in-person) considered the hypothetical scenario:

  • What would you do if you found yourself stranded on Mars with a limited food supply?
  • What kind of environmental conditions would you need to create to grow food for yourself in a soilless medium?

In-person students built a larger-scale system that featured pepper and tomato plants, whereas the take-home kits (explained in the video series below) required seed germination. The project allowed for hands-on application of key concepts such as systems design, cycling of matter (Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration) and sustainability.

Samuel Powel School ($945)

Ms. T. Shaw

Select group of 3rd and 4th special education students wrote and illustrated personal narratives that were bound into published books.

Students were exposed to different books in order to focus on specific traits of strong writing.  The stories helped students develop their own narratives. They learned how to better focus their narrative on a single event with appropriate details. Students also appreciated having so many different options when it came to illustrating their stories.  The grant allowed for various art supplies such as colored pencils, flair pens, metallic pens, multicultural crayons, and markers.

On a final note, students were very happy to bring their books home and share them with their families.
